I joined the Tavistock Institute in 2005 and became its CEO in 2008.

When I am not busy overseeing the daily activities of the Tavistock Institute, thinking about its future, strategising and nurturing its cutting-edge profile, I work with organisation and community change agents, exploring how to work in the unknown, in conditions of high turbulence, uncertainty and ambiguity. I have a special interest in the dialectic between leadership, ethics and aesthetics using a participative design approach. I have written and spoken about leading and designing as participation using artistic and technological methods in my work and thought. I am a UKCP registered Gestalt Psychotherapist, a Chartered Scientist Psychologist (BPS) and a keen practitioner in Group Relations, the Tavistock enterprise’s core ‘learning through experience’ practice.

Complexity theory

As Chief Executive, I embody my theoretical grounding in uncertainty and complexity whilst leading the governance and management of the Tavistock Institute. In 1995 I had the opportunity to join a pioneering group at the University of Hertfordshire’s Business School, led by Prof Ralph Stacey and Prof Patricia Shaw, who set up the CMC (Complexity & Management Centre) to study and understand organizational dynamics and behavior using the lens of complexity and chaos theories. I spent ten years working, growing, developing in the Complexity & Management Centre including taking up a faculty role on the CMC’s internationally acclaimed Doctorate programme where I successfully supervised a number of PhD and MA students. My own PhD pursuit was in furthering the understanding of Learning as a potential transformation of identity. I particularly focused on the dynamics of panic and shame as integral aspects of any process of development.

Group Relations and Professional Development

I regularly staff and direct Group Relations conferences nationally and internationally. Since 2007, I have directed and made innovations to the Tavistock Institute’s flagship conference, ‘Authority, Role and Organisation’, otherwise known as the ‘Leicester’ conference; the Yoga event and the Design Event are now regular aspects of the Leicester Model.

I have directed the Fall GRC of Teachers College, Colombia University since 2013 and have recently been appointed to direct the AK Rice national conferences in the USA from 2016, which further signifies and extends the global collaboration in the Group relations network.

2016 will be my third year directing the Tavistock Institute’s Coaching for Leadership and Professional Development course with Dr McKay, and we are also launching a new course together: Coaching Supervision.

Gestalt Psychotherapy and Theory

As a Gestalt psychotherapist I see clients, supervise psychotherapy trainees and am also a faculty member on a Masters programme in Organisational Development from a Systemic Gestalt and Complexity Perspectives (Metanoia Institute and Middlesex University). Our P3C graduates who are interested in an Organisational Masters can join this course in its second year as part of an APL (accredited previous learning) agreement. This cross-fertilising relationship is very pleasing for me as a people developer.
